5-card stud poker is a type of poker game that is played with five cards. It is one of the earliest variations of poker played since two hundred years. It is a popular form of poker played extensively in Canada and Finland.

Poker Rules and Betting Limits

In the third round players get their third show card and they bet a third time. Players get the final show card and the last round of betting takes place. Procedure of the Game

One must be aware of the procedure for the game. All activity takes place in a clockwise direction. First, players have to put a token bet called ante, before card distribution begins, except in the less than one-dollar game. In the first round, the player with the smallest cards places a bet that is at least half the ante.

The rule changes and the person with the maximum value cards start betting. In case there is a tie, the person seated to the dealer's left hand side wagers first. The betting value doubles for every round, depending on the lower and higher limits.

Betting System in the Game

Any player can wager an utmost of four times in a single round. The four actions include a wager, a raise, a re-raise and a cap. A cap implies no more betting is permissible and all players either call or leave the game. When the players leave the game, the person to the left of the dealer gets priority.

The betting rules change if one plays the low hand variant of the game. In this, the person with the highest cards starts the betting. Subsequently the person with the lowest card wagers in every round. In case players prefer the high-low version, where the player with the highest cards and the player with the lowest cards share the prize, then the person with the highest cards gets priority in all dealings.

In case of a tie during the game, one can use coats to decide the winner. In another variation, other players do not see the final card. The rest of the dealing and betting is the same as the normal version of the game. 5-card stud poker is thus an enjoyable game where one can bet low and win a good amount of money during the game.
