The Main Cause of Insomnia? (29 May 2008)
Well in my opinion the main thing that keeps us tossing and turning at night is worrying about not going to sleep. Sure there might be other reasons for sleeplessness; chronic pain, restless legs syndrome, partner disturbance, too much coffee....

CORRELATION OF SEMINAL BIOCHEMICAL MARKERS WITH FERTILITY HORMONES AMONG SUDANESE INFERTILE PATIENTS (12 Apr 2008)
To study the correlation of seminal biochemical markers with fertility hormones among Sudanese infertile patients. Materials & Methods: The biochemical markers studied were fructose, citric acid, zinc, and neutral alpha-glucosidase. Their levels in semen were estimated using analytical photometry, spectrophotometry, and atomic absorption spectrometry. Estimation covered 500 infertile males (150 azoospermic, 150 oligospermic, 100 asthenozoospermic, and 100 with abnormal sperm morphology), as well as 100 normospermic control males. Fertility hormones were assayed in patients and controls by ELISA. Results: Seminal neutral alpha-glucosidase and zinc levels were found significantly reduced in all patients studied, while citric acid level was found reduced in azoospermic and oligospermic patients only (p < 0.05). Semen fructose level was found within the normal range. Significant correlation was noticed between neutral alpha-glucosidase and both follicle stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone (in azoospermic patients), and prolactin hormone (in oligospermic patients) p < 0.05. 2.7% of azoospermic patients had Sertoli cell only syndrome. 13% of the infertile patients had varicocele, and this was associated with a significant increase in FSH & LH and a decrease in seminal neutral alpha-glucosidase, citric acid and zinc (p < 0.05). 9.6% of patients studied had dysfunctional sexual problems and associated with a significant increase in prolactin. On the other hand, 7.2% of these patients were smokers and associated with a significant reduction in semen volume and levels of neutral alpha-glucosidase and zinc (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It is concluded that reduced seminal neutral alpha-glucosidase, zinc, and citric acid levels were detected in azoospermic and oligospermic patients only. While seminal fructose concentration showed no difference in all infertile patients; and neutral alpha-glucosidase level showed a significant correlation with abnormal spermogram. Presence of varicocele was associated with a significant increase in FSH & LH and a decrease in seminal neutral alpha-glucosidase, citric acid and zinc.

Diagnostic Criteria for Andropause (17 Dec 2007)
Though it has been difficult to accept that men could be subject to sex hormone fluctuations like women, it has been established that men develop clinical features secondary to low testosterone levels in later life. These clinical features have been grouped into a symptom complex called andropause, and referred to as the male version of menopause. Hypogonadism, partial androgen deficiency in men (PADAM) and relative hypogonadism have been used synonymously with andropause by various authors. This paper critically examines the criteria for diagnosis and suggests new criterion, which is expected to properly distinguish a benign and reversible condition currently called andropause from an irreversible condition currently called acute andropause, which is the true male version of female menopause.

Comparative Study of Intrapartum Placental and Peripheral Blood Malaria Parasitaemia in Mothers Delivering at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital UGANDA (08 Nov 2007)
Malaria in pregnancy (MIP) is underestimated because surveys to assess malaria in pregnancy mostly rely on peripheral blood smear (B/S) microscopy and yet it has been observed that mature forms of Plasmodium falcipurum disappear from peripheral blood into capillaries of deeper organs hence reduction in the diagnostic sensitivity of peripheral blood microscopy. The main objective of this study was to compare intrapartum placental and peripheral malaria parasitaemia with the specific aims of determining peripheral and placental parasitaemia levels and establishing the relationship with obstetric and demographic parameters

The effection of Traditional Chinese Herbal Bu-Wang-San on Neuronic Protection in Ovariectomized Rats (07 Nov 2007)
Bu-Wang-San (BWS) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of learning and memory impairment. The effect of BWS on neuroprotection and how BWS increases spine synapse number in menopaused women was investigated in the model of ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Sixteen OVX rats were divided into two groups, the OVX group and OVX+BWS group. After three months, Morris water maze was used to assess spatial acquisition and spatial retention. Swim time, swim distance, swim speed, quadrant time and platform crossing were recorded. The ultrastructure of spine synapse number in hippocampus were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In the spatial acquisition and spatial retention phase of testing, BWS group functioned significantly better than control group. Ultrastructural observation of the hippocampus of OVX group showed significantly less spine synapse number, however, BWS significantly increased spine synapse number. In addition, BWS significantly increased synaptophysin P38 (P38) mRNA expression in hippocampus. These results suggested that BWS could improve cognitive ability of menopause-induced learning and memory impairment. The positive effect of BWS on mouse learning and memory was associated with increase of spinal synapse number and increased the expression of synaptophysin P38 (P38) mRNA in hippocampus from menopause-induced injury.

The study of the effects of high dose and low dose of morphine , and morphine addiction on the acquisition , consolidation and retrieval of the memory in passive avoidance test on mice. (18 Oct 2007)
Dependence and impairment of learning and memory are two well-established features caused by abused drugs such as opioids.. It is found that Kappa opioids selectively control dopaminergic neurons projecting to the prefrontal cortex . Dopaminergic afferents arising from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) are crucial elements in the neural circuits that mediate arousal, motivation, and reinforcement. Some preclinical evidence suggests that the sigma receptor type 1 plays several roles in learning and memory. In this paper we try to distinguish the effects of three doses of morphine and morphine addiction on learning and memory in mice.

Synthesis of certain disubstituted thiourea and condensed thiourea derivatives for antihypertensive activity (09 Oct 2007)
Some new N-substituted-N'-(4-(piperidin-1-yl-sulfonyl)phenylthiourea derivatives and condensed thiourea derivatives such as, hexahydrobenzo[4,5]thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-one, 2-thioxo-2,3-dihydroquinazoline-4-one and thiohydantoin derivatives. have been synthesized and tested for their antihypertensive activity. Among the selected compounds, 3a can be considered more potent than the standard (nifedipine), compounds 2, 5 and 7 showed significant antihypertensive activity, while compound 3b exhibited only moderate antihypertensive activity. The detailed synthesis, spectroscopic and biological data are reported.

Cyclooxygenase-2 and HER2 expression in simultaneous breast ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive ductal carcinoma . (02 Oct 2007)
The aim of this study was to verify the correlation between the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and HER2 expression in non-neoplastic ductos, ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive ductal carcinoma found in the same breast. Histologic slices of 47 surgicals fragments were evaluated. The technique used to detect the protein was immunohistochemistry, with anti-HER2 and anti-COX-2 antibodies. Tumors that were scored +2 for membranous staining of HER2 protein were subjected to FISH. COX-2 was expressed positively in IDC, DCIS, normal epithelium, stroma tumor, and normal stroma in 41(87%), 40 (85%) and 35 (74.5%). HER2 was positive in 31 (65.9%) and negative in 16 (34.1%) of 47 cases de IDC. Positivity in DCIS of HER2 was observed in 31 cases (65.9%) and negativity in others 16 (34.1%). Analysis of normal epithelium, stroma tumor and normal stroma did not show HER2 protein expression by immunohistochemical.

Mosquito repellence and mosquitocides of B. alata, B. pilosa and C. ambrosioides (28 Aug 2007)
The evaluation of the efficacies of mosquito repellents and mosquitocides of Blumea alalta, Bidens pilosa and Chenopodium ambrosioides, plants used by some of the indigenous rural people of Hurungwe District, Mashonaland West Province, Zimbabwe, were carried out during the period: November 2006 to June 2007. The active constituents were extracted by dry distillation of the dried, powdered leaves of the three plants. The oily organic phases of the distillates were separated from the aqueous phases, and the used in repellence experiments on laboratory-reared Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The results revealed that the oils of B .alata, B. pilosa and C. ambrosioides extracts were effective mosquito repellents. Evaluation of the pesticides involved burning the dried, powdered leaves of the three plants on glowing charcoal in a clay pot to produce smoke that knocked down or killed laboratory-reared A. aegypti mosquitoes. The mosquitocidal action of the smoke that was generated from each of the three samples of plant leaves indicated that their mosquicidal efficacies were high and the plants could be used successfully as bases for the production of mosquitocides

Effect of TFC on Ultrastructure and Secretory Function of Synoviocytes in Joint of Adjuvant Arthritis Rats (11 Jul 2007)
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by joint swelling, synovial membrane inflammation, and cartilage destruction. Adjuvant arthritis(AA)is one of the main experimental models that shares some features with human RA at present[1,2]. Chrysanthemum is the dried inflorescence or bud of wild herb of Compositae (Chrysanthemum indicum L.), it has a long history using as a Chinese traditional medicine mainly for the treatment of inflammation. Previous studies have reported that Chrysanthemum indicum possesses the anti-bacteria, anti-virus, anti-oxidant and immunomodulatory properties. However, the relevant pharmacology research of active components from this plant remain to be investigated. Total flavonoids of Chrysanthemum indicum (TFC) was the effective composition from the wild Chrysanthemum indicum that separated and drew getting from the dried bud which explored anti-inflammation, analgesia and immunoloregulation action, the experiment indicates it had obvious prevention and therapeutical effect on AA rats [3,4]. In the present study, to further revealed the TFC function mechanism to AA rats, we adopt electron microscope technology and immunology method to observe the effect of TFC on AA rat's synoviocytes ultrastructure and secrete inflammation cytokine.
